We are proud of our public school system!

In state required 3-11 SAT9 testing, Gilmer County Students in grades 3-8 scored first in WV in Total Basic Skills.

In grades 3-11 Gilmer County students scored 5th highest in West Virginia out of 55 county school districts.

Gilmer County Schools have maintained an extensive program of extra-time/extra help programs that are available to all students.  Before school, after school, and summer programs have been offered to all students who need extra.

Standards have been raised for students to better prepare them for their adult life.  Graduation requirements have been increased to 28 credits and all students are required an extra math and science course above the state requirement.  All students are also required to complete a computer applications class.

Gilmer County High School is actively involved in the Southern Regional Education Board's "High Schools That Work" initiative and received a Silver Award for excellence in July of 2001.

Gilmer County High School's class of 1999 was the first in West Virginia to graduate with a defined program of studies with a major specialization.  Our program of studies is continually updated to reflect changing trends in student interest and available opportunities for our students.

Gilmer County was the first county in West Virginia to implement the School-to-Work initiative.  Through this involvement our school system has formed partnerships with many local businesses and agencies.  Our high school has a comprehensive work-based learning program that has served as a model for the state.

Our low teacher to student ratio (13.6:1) allows our staff to give individual attention to all students.

Small schools allow our elementary students to receive their education in their own communities through 6th grade.

A close working relationship with Glenville State College allows Gilmer County students to take college classes during the school day and use of other state-of-the-art college facilities.
